Marathon Grill, Greek Lady mark busy summer of eatery openings

This fall, students will return to a newly revitalized 40th Street corridor, thanks to a slew of retail openings during the summer.

Adding to the already eclectic mix of businesses in the area are three new restaurants and two new bars, including The Greek Lady, Marathon Grill and MarBar and the O-Bar.

So far, business has been great for the new arrivals.

"I'm busier than I expected to be," said Dimitrios Dimopoulos, owner of The Greek Lady.

He added, "I was surprised, considering that there was no advertising. It was all in the students' hands."

Marathon Grill Branch Manager Rob Socket was more exuberant about the location's early success.

"Business has been tremendous," Socket said. "We had a really nice mix of students and the community come to the place, beyond our expectations."

The Greek Lady opened in August at 222 S. 40th St., taking over retail space that had previously belonged to Simsum. Though its food cart location is still open, the restaurant version will take over much of the old menu while also offering an expanded menu.

Both the O-Bar and Marathon Grill opened in late June. The Marathon Grill is anchored next to the Bridge: Cinema de Lux on 40th and Walnut streets and serves lunch and dinner daily, as well as weekend brunch.

The O-Bar is located in the basement of Copabanana at 40th and Spruce streets. Its features include a dance floor and lounge area, where customers can enjoy the various DJs and local talent that the management brings in on a daily basis.

Similarly, the MarBar, Marathon Grill's first bar location and situated upstairs from the restaurant, will offer elevated dancing areas and nightly entertainment. It is due to open on Sept. 8, followed by a grand opening on Sept. 9.

Opening night acts include local DJ Lucas Rivera, backed by a live percussion section, and King Britt, a homegrown Philadelphia DJ turned international star.

Most of these businesses are excited by the influx of students coming to campus. The Greek Lady will begin delivery service starting Monday, when most students will have arrived on campus.

According to Cary Borish, co-owner of Marathon Grill, the opening of the MarBar was intentionally held off until the beginning of the school year.

"University students are our target audience," Borish said. "We expect to be even busier than we were."

Tony Sorrentino, spokesman for Facilities and Real Estate Services, said that the revitalization of the 40th Street district has been incredible.

"We now have a common space for both campus and community," he said. "The marketplace has been stimulated in University City, and these businesses are taking advantage of that opportunity."
